Visual Field

visual fieldA visual field test measures how much “side” or peripheral vision you have. It can be done by several different methods and is a straightforward test. It is painless and does not involve eye drops.

More extensive computerized testing of the visual field may be necessary due to concerns for glaucoma, retinal issues, or high-risk medications. Basically, one eye is patched and you put your chin in a rest in the machine. Lights are flashed at different locations and you must press a button whenever you see the lights. During the test, some of the lights are brighter or dimmer than others to determine how sensitive your eyes are in the periphery.

With today's technology, comprehensive visual field testing takes about 4-7 minutes per eye.

Baseline testing may be important for comparison during future exams. Your eye doctor will tell you if he/she recommends this testing. Changes in the visual field help to determine if the sight is getting worse. Generally, those with glaucoma have this testing frequently in the management of their eye disease.
