Better One or Better Two
A phoropter is one of the large pieces of equipment that eye care professionals put in front on your eyes during your eye examination. It contains many different lenses that are used to determine your prescription during a process called refraction. After a refraction, your eyeglass or contact lens prescription will be finalized.

Typically, the patient sits behind the phoropter, and looks through it at an eye chart placed at a distance and then at near for individuals needing reading glasses. The eye doctor then changes lenses and other settings, while asking the patient for “better one or better two” feedback on which settings gave the best vision. Sometimes an automated refractor or your old eyeglass prescription is used to provide initial settings for the phoropter.
