Pink Eye

Pink EyePink eye, or conjunctivitis, is swelling or an infection of the eye. The conjunctiva is a thin membrane lining the eyeball and eyelids. Generally, “pink eye” is meant to be a viral infection, but many get it confused with other causes of conjunctivitis.

Symptoms may include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Matting or crustiness in the lashes
  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Gritty or sandy feeling in the eye
  • Increased tearing
  • Itching or burning of the eye
  • Redness in the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light

How is it treated? Treatment of conjunctivitis depends on the cause. The most common causes are: allergic, bacterial, viral, and contact lens related issues. If the cause is allergic, an antihistamine medication or eye drop may soothe it, along with cool compresses. If it is bacterial, an antibiotic may be prescribed. Viral conjunctivitis generally will resolve on its own within seven to ten days, and can be quite contagious. Occasionally for severe cases, eye drops may be prescribed to help with the swelling or inflammation. For contact lens related issues, the fit may need to be reassessed, the multi-purpose solution may need to be changed, or the wearing schedule may need to be reduced.

It is important to see an eye care professional for full evaluation for any of the above symptoms. If the symptoms are left alone, they could get worse. Occasionally seeing your primary care physician may be helpful, but your eye doctor has a microscope that examines the conjunctiva and makes diagnosing the cause easier.
